Assigning a Backslash to a Variable in Python

I was trying to run a script in python that I found on internet, but I was a little bit surprised of some syntax, this:

EdgeCells = \

A Variable is assigned a value of: \

When I was trying to execute the code, I had the next error:

EdgeCells = \
             ^
SyntaxError: unexpected character after line continuation character

What does it mean using a bakslash in this way? How do I get rid of the error, I am using Python 2.7.18 and I am running my code on Windows 10, thanks
