Mailgun templating - access variable outside of loop - handlebars

I have an object that is built as so

{
"template": {
    "operator_name": "operator_name",
    "touchpoint_name": "test_touchpoint_name",
    "logs": [
        {
            "touchpoint_name": "test_touchpoint_name",
            "timestamp": "test_timestamp",
            "message": "test_message"
        }
    ]
}

}

I am trying to use it in mailguns template api like so

{{#each template.logs}}
  {{template.operator_name}}
  {{this.message}}
{{/end}}

However the template then expects the object data structure to come through like so

{
    "template": {
        "logs": [
            {
                "template": {
                    "operator_name": "test_operator_name",
                },
                "message": "test_message"
            }
        ]
    }
}

Mailgun uses handlebars.js to render its templates. The documentation states that data outside of the loop context can be targeted via a path...so I have tried targeting operator_name with ../operator_name and ../../operator_name for good measure, but neither make any difference - I suspect that the version of handlebars they forked from older than 4, when this was introduced (the doc states there was a previous way to target in the release notes, but I can't seem to find it)

I also notice that the this keyword seems extraneous here, because you can target anything in that logs loop without it, despite what mailgun documentation states.

Does anyone know how I can target data outside of the loop?
